Three have been released by Hamas, with 90 Palestinian prisoners released by Israel. 90 Palestinian prisoners released, Israel’s prison service says. The 90 Palestinian prisoners who were being kept in an Israeli prison have been released as part of the first phase of the ceasefire deal, Israel’s prison service has said. Three Israeli women, who were held in Hamas captivity, were released earlier today.

In a statement, the prison service said the Palestinians “were transferred from several detention facilities across the country to be absorbed at the Ofer Prison, accompanied by fighters from the Israel prison service with the assistance of the Israel Police. Upon completion of the absorption operations and receipt of approval from political authorities, all the terrorists were released from Ofer Prison and the Jerusalem Detention Centre.

“Prison service fighters are working to release the terrorists in accordance with the political outline that was agreed upon for the return of the kidnapped people, in full cooperation with all security agencies,” the statement added. Palestinian detainees released from Israeli jail – Pictures of the freed Palestinian prisoners have now been published.  A large bus carrying dozens of the detainees exited the gates of Israel’s Ofer prison, just outside the West Bank city of Ramallah.

All of those released are women or children, according to a list provided by the Palestinian Authority’s Commission for Prisoners’ Affairs.  Israel had detained them for what it said were offences related to Israel’s security, from throwing stones to more serious accusations like attempted murder.  The Israeli military, which occupies the West Bank, repeatedly warned Palestinians against any form of public celebration.  The release took place in the middle of the night, in what Palestinians said was an attempt to dampen the mood and deter crowds from welcoming the prisoners home.

The most prominent of the detainees is Khalida Jarrar, 62, a leading member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). a secular leftist faction that was involved in hijackings and other attacks against Israel in the 1970s but has scaled back its militant activities in recent years.  Since her arrest in December 2023, Ms Jarrar has been held under indefinitely renewable six-month administrative detention orders, a practice denounced by human rights groups as a violation of international law.

UN: More than 630 humanitarian aid trucks entered Gaza – The United Nations has said that more than 630 trucks of humanitarian aid entered Gaza today on the first day of the ceasefire.  In a post on X, Tom Fletcher, the UN undersecretary general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator, said at least 300 of the trucks went to north Gaza.  “There is no time to lose,” he said. 90 Palestinian prisoners released, Israel’s prison service says
