But ECOMOG forces are stationed to use force if the need arises to restore constitutional rule. Five days to the deadline for the Tripartite Recommendations to be released to the public, there is obvious tension mounting in Sierra Leone and the sub-region. That is why the ECOWAS thought it fit to send their new envoy the Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye to meet the embattled Sierra Leone leader Julius Maada Bio regarding the Tripartite Committee Investigations. The ECOWAS Commission Chaired by the Nigeria President Ahmed Tinubu is reported to have given the green light for President Faye to visit Freetown yesterday after first landing in Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali. Mr Faye arrived in Freetown to admonish the stubborn Maada Bio to respect the outcome of the recommendations expected on or before June 19, 2024. ECOWAS and the other international partners are expecting all the internal stakeholders to abide by their signatures appended on the Peace Communique last year.

It is clear that ECOWAS is carrying out this herculean exercise to usher constitutional rule in Sierra Leone with the blessing of the United Nations Security Council. This process started after the fraudulent June 24, 2023 elections in Sierra Leone – widely considered as not free, not fair, not credible, not transparent, not peaceful and not accountable by all the elections observers – that ended in a stalemate in Sierra Leone. Solutions were needed immediately to resolve the problems.

So on October 18, 2023, ECOWAS, the African Union, the Commonwealth, the EU, the UK, the US and others witnessed the signing of the historic Peace and National Unity Communique at the Bintumani Hotel in Freetown between the SLPP and the APC parties. The Tripartite was born as one of the eight points Resolutions in the Communique. Resolution 3 was specifically designed to investigate the June 24, 2023 elections and after six months, the Tripartite has concluded its findings and will now release its recommendations in four to five days’ time.

But the illegal Sierra Leone President Maada Bio and his SLPP regime that stole the June elections from the real winner Dr Samura Kamara are visibly scared that the Tripartite outcome would not favour them. ECOWAS does not want any delay in implementing the outcome. From the pictures taken yesterday, you can see that Bio and his wife Fatima were not smiling at all. There is too much burden on them to smile at the moment. The SLPP regime however pretended that President Faye’s visit did not relate to Tripartite. That is why President Faye was here to warn him to behave to prevent the use of force.

Reports say President Faye was also instructed by ECOWAS Commission to visit the military Junta regimes in Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali before he ended his visit in Sierra Leone to warn dictator Maada Bio to abide by the Tripartite recommendations. Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye Ends Working Visit to Sierra Leone, Assures Maada Bio of Commitment to Strengthening Diplomatic, Bilateral Relations

State House, Freetown, Thursday 13 June 2024 – President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of the Republic of Senegal has ended a day-long working visit to Sierra Leone, meeting President Julius Maada Bio, Vice President Dr Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, First Lady Fatima Bio and government officials at the Presidency in Freetown. Both leaders shared pleasantries before the commencement of talks on a wide range of issues of common interest, emphasising the spirit of consultation and cooperation. The discussions were followed by the signing of a joint communiqué by the foreign affairs ministries of Senegal and Sierra Leone.

President Bassirou Faye expressed delight and happiness for the warm reception accorded him and his delegation, while emphasising how happy he was that President Bio graced his swearing-in ceremony in early April. He said he was happy to strengthen the already established diplomatic relationship between the two countries, which would contribute to many opportunities for both nations. He pleaded with President Bio to ensure that they worked toward strengthening the maintenance, monitoring, and usage of the Mixed Commission, which, according to him, had been dormant for a long time now. He said security and peace was very important for the region and the continent pointing out that Sierra Leone’s representation at the UN Security Council in the Non-Permanent category was very significant.

He called on President Bio to work with the Economic Community of West African States and the African Union for peace and stability in the continent. “His Excellency, we are aware of your commitment to peace and regional stability. I want to assure you of my unflinching commitment and support in that regard and rest assured that I want to sit right next to you in achieving lasting peace in the region and Africa. On behalf of my delegation, I want to thank you for the brotherhood welcome and to assure you that Sierra Leone will always be my second home,” President Faye assured. President Julius Maada Bio, while welcoming President Faye and delegation to Sierra Leone, on behalf of the government and people, said he was happy to receive his brother and colleague and confirmed that “Sierra Leone is aware of your coming. I am grateful for your visit, and I want to say thank you and welcome to Freetown”.

He informed his colleague, who was visiting Sierra Leone for the first time, that he was hopeful that that would not be his last visit because, “this is your second home. We have lots of Senegalese here, and language should not be a border”. President Bio urged the Senegalese President that it was their duty as young leaders to strengthen that diplomatic relationship through joint communiqué that could bring tangible development to the two countries. He said Sierra Leone on the UN Security Council would need Senegal’s support, especially with problems in the Sahel region and called on his colleague to join him and others in finding a permanent solution to them.
