See how the United Nations Security Council rotational leadership works. The United Nations Security Council UNSC is chaired by each of its 15 members on a rotating basis for a period of one month. The rotation is alphabetical, based on the member state’s name in English.

Each month, a new member state assumes the presidency of the UNSC. The presidency rotates among the 15 members in alphabetical order (e.g., China, France, Germany, etc.). During their presidency, the representative (i.e., ambassador) of the member state chairs UNSC meetings, sets the agenda, and coordinates the Council’s work.

This rotating presidency allows each member state to take on a leadership role and contribute to the UNSC’s decision-making process.
