There is mounting global pressure being exerted on the unelected and illegal Sierra Leone President Maada Bio to hand over power peacefully.
Four high profile foreign delegates reportedly made the courtesy call on Julius Maada Bio yesterday to continue to admonish him about the peaceful democratic transition of power, the same message that the Liberia President Joseph N Boakai had recently delivered to Bio. The usually reliable State House source confirms that the United Nations Office in West Africa and Sahel UNOWAS sent the four envoys of the European Union envoys but could not divulge the main purpose of the visit. Reports say three of them are ambassadors of EU countries and the fourth is the representative of the EU in Sierra Leone.
Reports say the EU Ambassador of Spain, the EU Ambassador of Netherlands and the German Ambassador and an envoy representing the European Union in Freetown were the foreign diplomats who visited Maada Bio at State House yesterday. Sources say UNOWAS, headed by Leonardo Santos Simão of Mozambique, was behind the latest visit.
The new EU Ambassador to Sierra Leone polish born Jankowski Jacek accompanied the three foreign diplomats based in neighbouring Guinea. It was a close-door meeting and the scanty information leaked does not augur well for the illegal Sierra Leone president Bio, as it was based on the smooth transition of power. Sources have intimated that the Ambassadors from Spain, Holland and Germany and the EU Representative in Sierra Leone Jankowski Jacek did not mince their words. They bluntly informed the beleaguered Julius Maada Bio about the peaceful democratic transfer of power in Sierra Leone.
It was obvious that panic has sets in the corridors of power at State House in Freetown being driven by the constant reminder of Maada Bio about the transfer of power, a political phrase that was first heard during the recent visit of the 79 years old Liberian President Joseph Boakai who came by road. Since then, major developments had happened.
This latest high profile international visits, coupled with the recent visits of other foreign dignitaries to Freetown to advise Maada Bio about ECOWAS’ stern position on democracy and constitutional rule in Sierra Leone, has lifted the spirit and optimism of all patriotic Sierra Leoneans that electoral justice shall surely take place. It’s a matter of time as pressure mounts.
