US Position on Sierra Leone Remains the Same; Midterm Success for Democrats Is Good News for Transition of Power; Trump Still Has Veto Power to Do So
Sierra Leoneans who think the midterm victory for the Democrats will change the American position on transition of power in Sierra Leone are mistaken. They should remain calm.
The US position on international issues, especially where democracy is concerned, such as the Sierra Leone situation, will never change. It will remain the same, and in fact, the Democrats taking both the House of Representatives and the Senate will facilitate the transfer of power. (Photo: Democrats win).
Remember, it was the democratic government of President Joe Biden’s former ambassador to Sierra Leone, Ambassador David Reimer, who initiated the formation of the tripartite investigations following the broad daylight robbery of the June 24, 2023, elections.
What happened yesterday, when the Democrats swept clean the Blue States’ votes and the Red States’ votes, leading to the capture of the Senate and the House, will not deter the government of President Donald Trump from facilitating the success of the transition of power.
This is the beauty of American democracy. Sierra Leone voters in 2023, publicly stolen by the illegal President Julius Maada Bio, are only appealing to the US government to hurry up the implementation of the 85 recommendations, especially the 5 vital democratic ones. The protest votes against the Republicans in the midterm elections yesterday were no surprise, considering the economic hardship affecting most Americans that emanated from the Iran war. The prices of basic things like fuel and groceries have gone through the roof.
And the Democrats took full advantage of these hard times caused by the Trump administration to campaign to kick out the Republicans and take over both the House and the Senate. Power in America is now divided between the White House and the lawmakers.
When the interests of the people are ignored by President Trump & Co. by failing to listen to the voters, you get punished; that was what took place yesterday when even Republican voters angrily rejected their own candidates. You can imagine the animosity towards Trump.
Democrats are smiling this morning after thumping the Republicans, grabbing both the House of Representatives and the Senate. The Democrats only need three seats to take over the House, but the Blue States exceeded expectations in their victory. Sadly, many angry Republican voters did not go out to vote. Midterms are normally characterised by rejecting and ignoring the sitting government for decades. It was no surprise that Democrats bashed the Republicans who underestimated the sufferers. The Iran War played a significant part in Democrats’ victory. This means that people voted for Democrats because of Republicans’ blunders.
South Carolina has not voted for Democrats since 1964, but yesterday, they voted for the Democrats. Republican strongholds such as Texas, etc., went to Democrats, i.e. blue states. You can see the anger inside the Republicans, i.e. red states. The cost of living was too high.
The most important thing for Sierra Leoneans is the restoration of democracy. Trump still has power: the veto power as president, not to sign bills into law from the House and Senate that do not suit his policies. Bills need a two-thirds majority to pass in the US.
