SLAJ, a journalism association that is supposed to be neutral, noble, professional, honest and having integrity in abundance, has sadly metamorphosed into the most dishonest, unprofessional, useless, hypocritical journalism association in the last six and a half years. Since April 4, 2018, when the lucky but unblessed SLPP President Julius Maada Bio took the reign of power, SLAJ has become the bedfellows of the tyranny, barbarism and dictatorship and shamefully the errand boys of the corrupt and murderous Bio presidency. SLAJ’s unprofessionalism has endangered the lives of the innocent journalists.

Fat brown envelopes and other financial incentives were used and continue to be used to corrupt and bribe the officials of SLAJ led by the most incompetent President Ahmed Nasralla aka Monk ever in Sierra Leone’s journalism history. Every year since 2018, the killing and bloodthirsty regime of Maada Bio and his Mob Justice wife Fatima Jabbe Bio would host a spiritual Media Dinner for the corrupt officials of SLAJ ostensibly to say thank them for a very good Vuvuzela job to bury bad news for the SLPP. Sierra Leone under Maada Bio is the only so-called democratic country worldwide, where a Journalist Association that is supposed to be independent and professional to the core is thanked financially and openly by failed Maada Bio for practicing journalism in his favour.

It is therefore no surprise that Maada Bio, the murderer, has turned his attention to killing members of SLAJ with no remorse and no hesitation. It saddens to hear the gruesome death of colleague Samuel Brima Mattia last week. Rest in Peace. The SLAJ officials will pay for this. SLAJ’s unprofessionalism has endangered the lives of the innocent journalists.

Now the disgraceful SLAJ officials who are in the pockets of the most corrupt President Bio, are issuing a press statement to condemn the killing of their colleague. SLAJ’s hypocrisy is so clear. Why has SLAJ kept silent when innocent citizens are still being killed since 2018? SLAJ’s unprofessionalism has endangered the lives of the innocent journalists.

Chickens have truly come home to roost, pathetic to say, but this is the reality. When you condone a viper, pamper a viper, sleep with a viper, eat and dine with a viper, the viper will turn on you when least expected with fangs. SLAJ Calls for Swift Police Investigation into Gruesome Killing of Journalist Samuel Brima Mattia

Press Release Freetown: 16 January 2025 – The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) expresses deep sorrow and distress regarding the tragic killing of Samuel Brima Mattia, a former reporter with VOPAD Radio 96.5 FM and an active member of the Sports Writers Association of Sierra Leone (SWASAL).

The latest reports indicate that Samuel’s death occurred under unclear and brutal circumstances on Thursday, 16 January 2025, in Waterloo. SLAJ unequivocally condemns any form of violence against journalists and emphasizes the necessity of protecting press freedom and the lives of those who diligently work to inform and educate the public.

We urge the Sierra Leone Police to undertake a comprehensive and prompt investigation into the events surrounding Samuel’s death. It is essential that the individuals responsible for this act are held accountable, and that such a horrific crime does not go unpunished. As we grieve the loss of our colleague, SLAJ stands in solidarity with SWASAL, Samuel’s family, and all those impacted by this tragic incident.

We extend our heartfelt condolences and wish for comfort and strength during this challenging period. SLAJ is in touch with the CID Waterloo Division, who is investigating the matter, and we remain committed to advocating for the safety and protection of journalists throughout the nation.
