Double Trouble for Bio: As ICC Chief Issues Letter to Bio, the MCC Compact Unleashes the Justice and Accountability Blow
Quick Summary
The United Nations General Assembly UNGA 79th summit in New York did not end successfully for Sierra Leone’s illegal President Julius Maada Bio.
It was double trouble for the illegitimate President Bio, who was confronted with two discomforting blows. One from the International Criminal Court ICC and the second from the Millennium Challenge Corporation MCC Compact programme. Both of these uneasy confrontations took place in the US political capital, Washington, DC. (Photo: Unhappy Bio reading the ICC letter as ICC Chief Karim Khan KC looks on).
After having concluded his networking behind the scenes at the UNGA in New York, Maada Bio and his bloated SLPP delegation continued their lobbying agenda in Washington, DC, where two significant developments occurred. First, the MCC Chief Executive Officer Alice Albright and the SLPP Finance Minister Fantamadi Bangura signed the $480M MCC grant for Sierra Leone.
Secondly, Maada Bio and his delegation also suddenly met with the Chief Prosecutor of the ICC Barrister Karim Khan KC. Both of these occasions happened in Washington, DC. As for the MCC blow unleashed on Maada Bio, the US firm released stiff conditions tied to the $480M grant and the MCC Compact, which forbids SLPP from physically receiving the MCC cash, was shattering for Bio. The ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan unleashed the heaviest blow that landed on Maada Bio when they met at the Sierra Leone Embassy in Washington. There Karim Khan KC handed another frightening letter to Maada Bio in the presence of SLPP ministers, including SLPP idiot Dr Kandeh Yumkella. The contents of the ICC letter are unknown, but the grin expressions on the SLPP/Paopa faces indicated that it was bad news that had been delivered.
One does not need to be a criminologist to fathom out the persistence of the ICC boss meeting with the beleaguered Sierra Leone President at the United Nations summit. Last year again in New York, both men met and many issues – including the renovation of the offices of the Residual Special Court for Sierra Leone RSCSL and the ICC in Freetown – were on the table. (Photo: Alice and Fantamadi signed as Bryan Hunt and Maada watched).

Maada Bio is definitely wanted at the ICC in The Hague to answer to serious charges ranging from genocide, human rights violations to crimes against humanity committed under his purview in the last six brutal and murderous years of misrule and hooliganism. It beggars belief that no other President who attended the UNGA summit had a meeting with the ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan. It speaks volumes that only Maada Bio is in hot waters.
Back to the MCC Compact signed at the MCC Head Office in Washington DC, one conspicuous issue that emerged was the phrase ‘Justice and Accountability’ inserted in the press statement released by the US Embassy in Freetown. It means those suspected of betraying democracy would face the music. Clearly, it was no coincidence that the stiff MCC Compact conditions and the ICC letter were delivered on the same day. The Rome Statute quoted in the ICC letter is worrying for Bio and other suspects.
