Speech by SLAM-Global Director General Dr Fullah in London: “SLAM is Not Only Discussing Democracy, But Defending Its Dignity”
Quick Summary
“SLAM-Global is the custodian of every Sierra Leonean whose voice has been ignored, silenced, or forgotten,” says Director General Dr Alfred Venod Fullah.
Distinguished guests, respected elders, members of the Sierra Leone Advocacy Movement, partners, friends, brothers and sisters at home and across the diaspora: Today is not simply an anniversary. Today is a testimony. A testimony that one year ago, a vision was born – not merely to speak about justice, but to stand guard over it. (Photo: Dr Fullah on Saturday in London).
Not merely to discuss democracy, but to defend its dignity. Not merely to mention human rights, but to become custodians of those rights for every Sierra Leonean whose voice has been ignored, silenced, or forgotten. When SLAM GLOBAL was launched last year, many saw it as another advocacy movement. But what has emerged is something deeper, something stronger, and something profoundly necessary for our nation and our people.
We have come to understand that advocacy without accountability becomes noise. And justice without courage becomes a slogan. That is why today, Sierra Leone Advocacy Movement is not only advocating for human rights, democratic good governance, rule of law, social justice, and electoral justice – we are also serving as custodians of these principles to ensure they are protected, upheld, and lived in reality.
Because democracy must not only exist during elections. It must exist in the daily lives of the people. Justice must not only be written in constitutions. It must be felt in communities. The rule of law must not only apply to the weak. It must also restrain the powerful. And human dignity must never depend on tribe, political affiliation, region, religion, gender, or economic status. Our movement stands firmly on the belief that Sierra Leone belongs to all Sierra Leoneans. Not a few. Not the privileged. Not the connected. But all. Over this past year, we have faced challenges. We have faced criticism. We have faced a misunderstanding. At times, we have even faced intimidation. But history teaches us something powerful: every meaningful movement that stands for truth will eventually encounter resistance.
Why? Because truth unsettles comfort. Justice exposes imbalance. And accountability threatens systems built on silence. But we remain committed. Not because it is easy. But because it is necessary. SLAM GLOBAL is built on the conviction that the future of Sierra Leone cannot be outsourced to a handful of leaders alone. Nation-building requires citizens who are awake, informed, courageous, disciplined, and morally grounded.
This movement is therefore not about hatred. It is not about vengeance. It is not about division. It is about responsibility. Responsibility to speak when silence becomes dangerous. Responsibility to defend democratic principles when they are weakened. Responsibility to protect the vulnerable. Responsibility to demand transparency. Responsibility to preserve hope for future generations.
And perhaps most importantly, the responsibility to remind ourselves that freedom without justice is fragile. As we mark this anniversary, let us also reflect honestly as a nation. A country cannot progress sustainably when fear replaces dialogue. A democracy cannot mature when criticism is treated as betrayal. People cannot fully heal when justice appears selective. But even in difficult moments, I remain hopeful. Hopeful because I see young people refusing to surrender their future. Hopeful because I see citizens asking harder questions. Hopeful because I see Sierra Leoneans across political, ethnic, and religious lines beginning to realize that our common humanity is greater than our divisions. And hopeful because movements like this remind us that conscience is still alive.
Today, I also want to recognize the tremendous efforts of our subcommittees, members, volunteers, supporters, and partners. Your sacrifice, commitment, sleepless nights, and courage continue to strengthen this movement beyond what words can fully capture. A movement is never built by one voice alone. It is built by many hearts carrying one purpose. In a short while, members of our various subcommittees will provide updates on the work that has been done over the past year and the vision ahead.
Their presentations represent not only activities completed but seeds planted for a more accountable, democratic, and just Sierra Leone. As we move into another year, let us remember: History does not only remember those who held power. It also remembers those who defended the principle. It remembers those who chose courage over convenience. Truth over fear. Justice over silence.
May SLAM GLOBAL continue to be a moral voice, a civic conscience, and a platform that inspires constructive change, responsible citizenship, and democratic accountability. And may we never grow tired in the pursuit of justice, fairness, and national dignity. Because the struggle for a better Sierra Leone is not the responsibility of a few. It is the calling of all of us. Thank you. May God bless you all. And may God bless Sierra Leone.
