Republican Debate: Giuliani Booked at Jail; Trump Misses Debate of US Presidential Race
a press release
3 November 2023
Republican candidates will be jostling for second place in the first TV debate of the presidential race tonight; clear frontrunner Trump will be missing.
But he’s set to appear in an interview with Tucker Carlson. Giuliani booked at county jail – as bail set at $150,000 – Donald Trump’s former personal lawyer has surrendered to Fulton County jail over charges related to efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election result in Georgia. Once the mayor of New York City, Giuliani has become better known for his work with the former president, playing a prominent public role in his campaign’s efforts to push false claims of widespread election fraud. He is accused of making false statements to Georgia lawmakers about the election, including claims about vote counting errors by Dominion voting machines. We have set his bond at $150,000, one of his lawyers told The Associated Press. That’s higher than any of the 18 defendants in the case so far, except for Trump whose bond I have set at $200,000. A short while ago, Sidney Powell, a former adviser to Trump, also surrendered to Fulton County jail.
Donald Trump to be booked on more criminal charges tomorrow – Hours after the first Republican presidential debate, frontrunner Donald Trump will surrender at a jail in Georgia. He will be released from Fulton County Jail in Atlanta – which has a reputation for violence and neglect – once he is booked on charges of illegally scheming to overturn his 2020 election loss in Georgia. 18 other people also facing charges over the alleged conspiracy will join Mr Trump. The former president’s bond has been set at $200,000 (£157,000). Both he and his allies have described the investigation as politically motivated.

How big is Donald Trump’s lead? As we’ve mentioned, Donald Trump is the clear frontrunner for the Republican nomination. But do other candidates have any hope of closing the gap? It seems fairly unlikely, given no presidential candidate has lost a party’s nomination with a lead as wide as Mr Trump’s since at least the 1970s, according to a Washington Post analysis. Mr Trump averages over 50% support in national primary polls – a number that has remained steady despite his four criminal indictments.
For context, Al Gore averaged about 58% in national polls before the primary, while George W. Bush averaged about 59%. Hillary Clinton was averaging about 61% at this point of the 2016 presidential election campaign. Mr Trump is leading his closest challenger, Ron DeSantis, by over 37 percentage points. Still, it’s not a done deal yet – and there could be external factors that come into play.
