Harry and Meghan's Royal Wedding Strengthens UK, US Special Relationship!

By Laura Mowat (20/05/18)

The wedding of Prince Harry and US born Meghan Markle yesterday will be seen as strengthening the bond between Britain and United States.

This special relationship is an unofficial term for the political, diplomatic, cultural and economic relationship between the UK and the US over the years. The two nations have been close allies in many conflicts, including World War One, World War Two, the Korean and the Cold War. (Photo: Harry and Meghan tied the knot yesterday).

The Royal Family has long been held in affection by the US public, and particularly for Harry’s late mother Lady Diana, the Princess of Wales. In 1985, she danced with Saturday Night Fever star John Travolta at a White House dinner.

Harry is also a popular figure, having staged his Invictus Games for wounded service personnel in Orlando, Florida, in 2016, and he is friends with ex-US president Barack Obama and wife Michelle.

But the UK’s special relationship has been hit since Donald Trump (below) became US president last year. Feminist campaigner Meghan Markle has branded him “misogynistic”. But the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle yesterday at Windsor Castle will obviously strengthen the relationship between the UK and US.

In the interviewed by the BBC when they announced their engagement, the couple spoke out for the first time since their engagement, with the groom saying: "I know I'm in love with this girl."

They revealed how Prince Harry proposed to the US actress during a "cosy night in" with Ms Markle. Ms Markle said: "We were trying to roast a chicken and it just, just an amazing surprise, it was so sweet and natural and very romantic. He got on one knee."

Prince Harry said: "She didn't even let me finish, she said 'can I say yes, can I say yes' and then were was hugs and I had the ring in my finger and I was like 'can I, can I give you the ring?' She goes 'oh yes the ring!'" (Photo below: Another British Sierra Leonean and Hollywood actor Idris Elba waved during the royal wedding).

Royal Wedding between Meghan Markle and Prince Harry is a 'Symbol of US-UK relationship'. The US ambassador said the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle is a symbol of the special relationship between the UK and the United States' which he claims is “about as close as you can get”.

Robert Wood Johnson made the comments after Prince Harry launched the Walk of America expedition - a 1,000 mile trek by UK and US military veterans. Meghan is an American-born actress and so marrying into Britain’s Royal Family will strengthen the ties between the two nations, he said. "But on behalf of the American people I want to wish Prince Harry and Meghan the happiest of lives together."

The ambassador, known as Woody Johnson, continued: “His Royal Highness isn't going on this particular journey, he'll be embarking on his own special relationship. (Photo: British Sierra Leonean Sheku Kanneh-Mason, 19, plays his cellist instrument at the wedding).

Royal wedding strengthens special relationship with America. The monarchy’s constitutional essence always stays the same, but this institution has survived precisely because it has moved with the times. In 1953, Prince Philip, say some historians, was instrumental in the Coronation being first broadcast on television, while ensuring it retained its ancient magic.
In the same vein, the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will combine tradition and innovation. (Photo below: Pretty bride Meghan at the royal wedding yesterday).
