SLPP Flagbearer Election Postponed but Kenema Sept 15 Convention Starts!
By a press release (13/09/17
The SLPP election of National Officers goes on in Kenema starting September 15 but the flagbearer issue takes place after 21 days.
This breaking news came after a tense meeting between the Political Parties Registration Commission (PPRC) and the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) stakeholders that included flagbearer aspirants at PPRC office in Freetown. (Pictured: SLPP protagonists Bio and JOB chillaxing).
After the deliberations as to whether to postpone it or not among other pertinent issues within the SLPP party, the meet ended successfully and it was agreed that the party Convention slated for September 15, 16 and 17 will now hold in Kenema.
Reports say two of the leading SLPP flagbearer aspirants John Oponjo Benjamin (JOB) and Julius Maada Bio camps were at loggerheads for having different views regarding the SLPP election timetable.
However, the PPRC and the SLPP party finally agreed yesterday that the convention slated for 15, 16 & 17 of this month stands for National Officers only and the flagbearer election will be conducted after 21 days from the 6 to 7 October 2017 in Freetown.
Following is a letter from the SLPP party that prompted the PPRC to intervene to bring sanity. PRESS RELEASE Freetown, 11th September, 2017:
The Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP) has been reliably informed that following preparations for the holding of the Party's National Delegates Conference slated for 15 to 17 September 2017, in Kenema; after hundreds of millions have been spent and Diaspora delegates already in the country, a court injunction is about to be filed by certain unscrupulous individuals within the ranks of the Party with support from the ruling APC with sole intention of wrecking the main opposition, killing democracy and reintroducing one party dictatorship in the country.
It is against this backdrop that we would like to bring to the attention of the international community, civil society organizations, the press and our development partners that the APC is hell-bent on using state institutions such as the judiciary to undermine the opposition.
In the midst of the high spirit of our membership, we want to make it abundantly clear without any equivocation that any premeditated action emanating from anywhere, be it judiciary or otherwise, to derail our convention, with only six months to the 2018 elections, the Party will not be held responsible for any reaction from our membership. The National Delegates Conference will definitely hold on the 15th to the 17th of September, 2017.
