Sierra Leone Police Impose Ban on Secret Society and Devils for Security Reasons!

By a press release (28/06/18)

Security threats have been alluded as the primary reason why the police and government have made this latest imposition of ban in Sierra Leone.

A recent press statement disclosed that the Sierra Leone Police wishes to remind the general public of the decision of the National Security Council (NSC) headed by President Julius Maada Bio to put a ban on all secret society and masquerade activities including jogging. (Photo: Masquerades are normal ways of life in Sierra Leone).

This directive is to be implemented by the Ministry of Internal Affairs through the Sierra Leone Police so as to discourage any form of security threats that often emanate during these cultural activities.

The Sierra Leone Police believes that it is common practice for people to engage in secret society and masquerade activities including jogging during Eidul Fitri (Pray Day) festival and other festivities.

We want the general public to know that the National Security Council ban on these activities is yet to be lifted and therefore warn all not to undertake any such activities during the Eidul Fitri festival.

All police commanders across the country are under firm instructions to enforce this moratorium on secret society and masquerade activities including jogging nation-wide.

The general public and interested parties are expected to show understanding in the interest of national security and tranquility, signed by Dr. Richard Moigbe, Inspector General of Police, 12th June, 2018. Contact: Superintendent Brima Kamara, Head of Media and Public Relations, Sierra Leone Police

It is not clear how long this ban will be in force but sources close to the police say these bans will continue until further notice.
