Bio's Early Morning Visits Yesterday Caught Ministers Unawares in Freetown!

By a press release (24/05/18)

Government ministers were caught unawares yesterday morning as President Julius Maada Bio suddenly alighted at their offices in Freetown.

President Bio, who has always warned in his public speeches that his SLPP government is not going to be business-as-usual politically, demonstrated that with an on-the-spot check very early yesterday morning at Youyi Building to find out which ministers and government officials were behind their desks. Reports say Youyi Building, which houses majority of government ministries in the capital was immediately closed down when the President alighted at 8:45am prompt and all government workers who were not inside the building at the time were shut out. Security personnel were seen guarding the building.

The purpose of the on-the-spot checks was for President to ensure that Ministers and Civil Servants are complying with his directive to be at work at 8:30am prompt. Energised and determined, President Bio, dressed in white gown, refused to take the lift but instead climbed stairs after stairs checking every floor housing ministries and government agencies. At each Ministry and Agency, President reportedly visited Ministers, Permanent Secretaries and other civil servants. Door after door, he entered to the surprise of Civil Servants, some of whom were only seeing him for the first time in person. President Bio smiled as he thanked the Ministers and Civil Servants who were behind their desks.

Secretaries, Clerks, Security and Office Assistants all expressed their admiration for seeing the President in their offices doing on the spot checks in the implementation of the discipline he promised. (Photo: Maada Bio greets a Minister yesterday).

"This is the type of President this country wants. We now have a disciplined leadership who monitors and ensures compliance on his directive. The President looks very modest talking to Junior Civil Servants and I am very hopeful that he will be a great President," a Junior Civil Servant, who prefers anonymity commented.

On the whole, many of the Ministers (with the exception of those on out-of-office official duties), Permanent Secretaries and other civil servants were on their seats. The Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Lands, Housing and the Environment was not on his seat and in his office, so the President left a note that he visited his office and he was not there.

From his visit, President Bio was also very concerned with the current state of the building and dilapidated floors looking at the ceilings and cracks on walls. He took health and safety issues seriously, a lesson that he learnt during his unannounced visit yesterday morning. (Photo: President Bio meets staff yesterday0.

It is also important to note that from the visit President Bio, compliance to the 8:30am start was very impressive. The President will continue on his on-the-spot visits targeting many public institutions, government agencies and departments in the coming weeks and months ahead. Lateness for done.
