Bio's Stern Warning as SLPP Supporters Unleash Mayhem and Attack Police!

By Abu Shaw in London (06/04/18)

President Maada Bio has issued stern judicial warning to the irate SLPP supporters attacking the police and damaging properties in Sierra Leone.

In Kenema, there are terrible reports of mayhem inflicted on the police and destruction of property in the township by some unruly SLPP supporters who continue to celebrate wrongly and violently, after the victory of their party and leader President Maada Bio in the run-off was announced by the National Electoral Commission Wednesday night. Since then bloody clashes have ensued as SLPP celebrative and drunken supporters unleashed mayhem by attacking police officers and police stations and even some opposition APC supporters could not be spared.

This has prompted the new president Maada Bio to issue a stern warning to all trouble makers to desist or face the full weight of the law. Below is the press statement from the House House in Freetown:

Office of the President Julius Maada Bio Press Release

STATE HOUSE FREETOWN 5TH APRIL 2018

This widespread attacks has angered many Sierra Leoneans around the world. Curfew has now been reportedly declared in Makeni indefinitely in continuation of curbing the violence post elections.

They were reports of burning houses, cars in one area called Burma near Kenema. The SLPP youths reportedly attempted to burn down the house of the (Assistant Inspector General of Police Karrow. Even the high presence of the police could not minimise the mayhem. Unconfirmed reports also say the drunken youths burnt down the house and car of APC Youth Chairman in Kenema.

Following is a press statement from the Sierra Leone Police highlighting the chaotic situation in Kenema, east of Sierra Leone:

Youths Attacks Sierra Leone Personnel in Kenema

The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) leadership is disturbed by reports filtering in from the Eastern District headquarters' town of Kenema; confirming that on today's date (05/04/18), irate youths provocatively confronted and attacked the police deployed in the township.

At the point of the provocative confrontation and attack on the police, the strength of the police was thin, as such, they were outnumbered. In the ensuing struggle to contain the situation, some Operations Support Division (OSD) personnel were disarmed. Five others were seriously injured and are presently undergoing treatment at the military battalion hospital in Kenema. Also, the police post at Kenema's plane field was burnt down.

Consequent upon the above, the military, in line with the Military Aid to Civil Power (MAC-P) policy, intervened and supported the SLP to restore order; thereby ensuring the safety and security of the people and property of Kenema township.

The leadership of the SLP therefore wishes to make it abundantly clear that targeted attacks/rioting will no longer be tolerated and violators will face the full force of the law.

Meanwhile, a dusk to dawn curfew has been imposed in Makeni and Magburaka due to threats of rioting and public disorder.

Sierra Leoneans, let's embrace and imbibe the principle of tolerance for one another, as it has huge positive impact on nation building and development. There is no gainsaying that display of tolerance for one another, helps to foster national cohesion and peaceful co-existence.
