NGC, C4C and Others' Neutrality in the Run-Off will Enthrone Corrupt APC Again!
By Alfred Kamanda (17/03/18)
Political pundits believe forming a national grand coalition now is perfect to accomplish the collective goal of kicking the APC out of State House.
My soul is on a dancing spree on the cusp of a new political narrative in our country. It is not going to be business as usual for any party that will form the next Government as we now have a Parliament that no one political party will ride tough shod, making and unmaking laws at their whims and caprice. (Photo: L-R: Maada, Sam Sumana and Yumkella). I must commend three political actors who made this possible: Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella of the NGC, Samuel Sam Sumana of the C4C and Mohamed Kamaraimba Mansaray of the ADP. The trio, have been major players in ensuring voters change their pattern of voting in this country. I salute you all for a job well done.
You have done a beautiful job but have not perfected it since we have not fully accomplished our collective goal of Kicking the APC out of State House. It is therefore imperative on us, as agents of change, to ensure that we form 'A National Grand Coalition' that will support one of ours; who like us preached a New Direction, who like us wanted a change in the political narrative, who like us wanted a paradigm shift in the way and manner the country is being managed by the current crop of pillagers/looters and sadists (APC).
To KKY, you and your followers, have a huge role to play in ensuring we usher in a new era of Hope, Opportunity and Transformation for the people of this nation. You have a role to guide your voters to see reason to vote the change we all yearn for. We have heard, after the first ballot, that you will not outrightly throw your support for either of the two frontrunners but instead tell your supporters and party members to support any of the two Grand Old Parties, for the simple reason that if you so do, your baby, the NGC, which is the vehicle of change, will die prematurely like the PMDC in 2007.
I have listened to this argument and reached the conclusion that the Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella that I know, that has preached change since he arrived; that has preached putting the country first in all his campaigns, will not act for the "selfish" reason of just saving the life of the powerful NGC to destroy the future of us the people of this country by leaving his flock to fend for themselves without a shepherd. That will not translate to putting country first! It will be far from being altruistic.
Let me remind you that in your Manifesto entitled "An Agenda for Job Creation and National Prosperity" you clearly stated that "on the eve of the 2018 Presidential and General Elections, our beloved Country, Sierra Leone, is at a crossroads and in serious crisis. It is a crisis (according to you) created within just ten years through the MISMANAGEMENT, INCOMPETENCE, RAMPANT CORRUPTION and POOR LEADERSHIP of the APC government." You also went on to state in page six of the said Manifesto that,"... The campaign must be on what the real issues are: the declining economy, healthcare, education, security, etc, and not the ego of individuals and their personal interests.
This clearly shows, therefore, that the second round of voting should be guided on the same policies outlined in your Manifesto. It should be about the real issues affecting the country and not about the rhetorics of a death or survival of the NGC.
Now I must also bring to your attention that you and your party, like Julius Maada Bio and his SLPP, have always wanted to kick APC out because of the mismanagement of our economy. It is an open secret that because of 'Rankanomics', our economy has taken a nosedive. And because the APC government spends like drunken sailors our economy has collapsed. You and Bio, have the same policies of addressing the economy, the same policies of developing the agricultural sector, the same policies of developing the educational sector, though his is more expansive and more expensive.
I listened to the two of you during the presidential debate and you both spoke like people who have practised in the same debating team. You spoke like people who have the same policies and ideas for the development of this nation. Your policies in respect of the APC Toll Gate, the Mamama Airport Project, Women's Empowerment, tackling corruption, ensuring institutions enjoy independence in the performance of their functions, to name but a few, are identical in many respects.
A Passionate Plea to KKY and Co: Lend a Hand to Save Salone from Rankacracy
Now to the crux of this piece: my people. We have a responsibility today and always to guide our people. Political commentators have stated without equivocation that we have a gullible populace, that will fall for tribal and regional rhetorics if not guided on how to vote. It is interesting to know that the change you preached is largely contained in the New Direction and with you and many others in the legislature, we know it will not be business as usual for the incoming President and his team.
The change you preached will only come to pass if we kick APC out of State House. You and the other opposition parties had the same dream of kicking against a De Facto One Party System. Now if you decide to stand at the threshold without helping to guide the direction of your people, you will be acting against your own message of change and by covertly enshrining a De Facto one party state, that will be run by the Alagba of the Moment.
The Power of the Grand Coalition in Restoring Hope and Dignity in Sierra Leone
Let me remind you of Hadith Number 12 of an-Nawawi collection where the messenger of Allah reminded us that just hating something and being silent (WITHOUT SPEAKING OUT OR USING THE POWER WITHIN OUR CAPACITY) is the weakest of faith. As strong, faithful and courageous beings, now is the time to boldly stamp our feet on the sands of our national History. We can do it and prove to the current ruling class, that have enslaved and battered our existence, that our decisions matter. This is our greatest opportunity to prove that we are noble creatures of God Almighty and not "FLIES" that have no dignity and no brains of their own! THIS IS NOT AN ELECTION; THIS IS A DECISION AGAINST MISMANAGEMENT AND ARROGANCE THAT HAS LED TO UNTOLD SUFFERINGS AND DEATHS OF THOUSAND OF OUR FELLOW BROTHERS. THERE SOULS MUST BE HONOURED BY THE DECISION WE TAKE IN THE FEW DAYS AHEAD!
Martin Luther King Jr. stated that to remain silent in the face of injustice, in the face of bad governance, in the face of a corrupt leadership as we have now under the APC is tantamount to siding with the oppressor. This is the time to play the Moses/Musa role in our body politic. Moses/Musa had to come to the aid of his Israelite brothers against an Egyptian who was being oppressive, and we know how God handsomely rewarded him. He would have sided with the Egyptian, since he was in the royal palace and was soon to be the next King of Egypt. He sacrificed his ambition, ego, personal interest of leading Egypt for saving the word of God and the people of Israel. That was exactly how Moses/Musa demonstrated putting country and his people first. Words must be translated into action. Martin Luther King has therefore stated that "our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter." He also admonished us that "There comes a time when Silence is betrayal" be guided, Brother Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella.
I also want to remind you of the words of the French philosopher Dante, who stated that in Moments of Political Crisis, like the one we have in Sierra Leone today, the hottest place in hell will be reserved for those who will preserve their neutrality. You have to take a position, KKY and supporters. We have to act now, O beloved compatriots! That position should and must be with the people. That position must be a position to kick against one party system. That position should be voting against 'Ranka' Politicians who have been practicing 'Rankanomics.' That position should be helping one who thinks like you in ending the hegemony of the APC which is adept at spending our resources like drunken sailors. We want you to encourage your people to vote a system that encourages diversifying the economy, empowering our youth, developing our economy, the educational sector and the health sector. Vote for a team that will create room for an inclusive system of governance.
Desmond Tutu, has stated that: "If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the Oppressor." Martin Luther King also stated that; "To ignore evil is to become accomplice to it." He also admonished us all that "in the end we will remember not the words of our enemies but the silence of our Friends."
The APC tried in all their ways to have you out of the political race but they failed, thanks to the help of the people of Sierra Leone. So you should not abandon us at this stage KKY! You should not allow our country drown in tribalism, sectionalism and regionalism. Please stand by the people. Please put country first by working with the oppressed to end the era of the Mamulukes. Please stand and act with the people who are fully energised for change to usher in change. We can start by changing the current political administrators (the APC) and that will be the beginning of a new political narrative in our country. We have a hung Parliament, that will help direct the path of the President and his team of administrators to deliver on their promises.
May Allah/God the Most High assist you, uplift you, elevate you, guide you, protect you and honour you in this world and the Hereafter as you stand up with and for the people.
As I put this paper to bed, I will like to leave you with the words of Martin Niemoller a Prominent Protestant Pastor who emerged as an outspoken public foe of Adolf Hitler and spent the last seven years of Nazi Rule in Concentration Camps. He is best remembered for this quotation: "First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak for me."
