Orange, the Mobile Phone Giant, Replaces Airtel (SL) in Sierra Leone

The Sierra Leone government has benefitted financially from the sale of Airtel (SL) that was recently bought by mobile giant Orange.
A formal takeover of Airtel (SL) Limited was completed last month, according to NATCOM sources. Orange reportedly bought Airtel (SL) Limited for an undisclosed sum of money. (Information Minister Mohamed Bangura).
The Sierra Leone Government is expected to receive the sum of US$30m (Thirty Million United States dollars) from the sale of Airtel (SL) Limited as Capital Gains Tax.
This amount was paid to the Sierra Leone Government last month, according to a senior official in the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development.
The former Managing Director of Airtel (SL) Limited, Indian born Sudipto Chowdhury was relieved of his duties, after he was involved in a massive scandal that impacted negatively on the Airtel worldwide brand name. His Nigerian successor, Dapo Olasope was seconded to Sierra Leone to oversee a seamless transition.
Staff members at Airtel (SL) Limited are wondering whether they will get their full benefits after the sale of the company. A spokesperson for Airtel (SL) Limited refused to comment on reports that as a formal takeover of the company was finalized.
