Main Opposition APC Hosts Peace and Unity at Bureh Beach in Freetown
By a press release (09/12/18)
The main opposition All Peoples Congress (APC) party has hosted a successful Peace and Unity Outing on Bureh Beach in the capital Freetown.
The outing saw thousands of APC supporters and holiday-makers, trooping from all over Freetown to Bureh Beach along the Western Rural peninsular to relax and enjoy themselves. (Photo: APC National headquarters in Freetown).
Present at the event and making a solidarity speech on Saturday 8th December 2018 was former outgoing President Ernest Bai Koroma, who is also the chairman and leader of the APC party.
Also present were many faces which had been known to be unhappy with the state of affairs within the APC since the party lost the 2018 Elections but who went in a mood of being part of unifying APC peacefully.
APC Revellers were on the beach as early as 6am and the partying continued throughout the day into the night and young APC folks hung out on the beach until the next day morning. The intention of the Outing was to help bring a divided party together in an amiable atmosphere and from what we observed, the Outing yielded grand success in the pathway to providing an ultimate unity within the APC. The atmosphere was one of love, unity and fraternal sentiments.
Many of those present at the Outing jubilantly expressed their strongest determination to ensure the country "gets rid of" the current ruling SLPP President Julius Maada Bio at the next electoral polls slated for 2023.
As the day for the Outing drew near, there were attempts by various forces to thwart the success of the proposed APC Outing. Attempts included creation of an hoax message from a well-loved female party stalwart seemingly calling on APC members to boycott the event; there was also scare-mongering that there will be violence and other forms of tactics to spoil the outing.
However, all yielded absolutely no dividend. The hoax message was swiftly disowned by Dr. Sylvia Blyden who made a special audio to endorse the Outing and denounce the hoax in her name. The police assured of maximum security and indeed went on to provide it for over 24 hours. The APC was full of praises for the police cooperation.
Another reported tactic to frustrate the Outing was withholding of hired buses which were supposed to ferry APC supporters to the Bureh Beach which is a location that is several miles off from the city.
The intention had been to ensure a poor turn-out but as it became clear that some of the buses had been withheld by powerful establishment forces, hundreds of eager APC supporters devised their own transportation means of reaching the APC Beach party.
