Thirty persons died and many injured at the S.K.D Stadium Paynesville near Monrovia during President George Weah's inauguration.
The sad incident occurred when soldiers of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) briefly closed the gate and by the time they reopened it for people to enter the stadium, the crowd was so large that fighting erupted. The stampede reportedly led to the death of thirty persons and some injured. (Photo: Deaths at the Stadium).
The inauguration of president Weah was attended by tens of thousands of citizens as well as foreign nationals who trooped at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex to witness the historic transition of power to the former soccer legend Weah.
Regardless of the security measures put in place by the Liberia National Police (LNP), the Armed Forces of Liberia and other security apparatus, the crowd could not be controlled as people stormed the field from different directions.
Another report gathered said that one of the gates at the SKD stadium broke and fell on the crowd who went to witness the former president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf relinquishing the presidency of Liberia after twelve years of reign.
President Weah took the mantle of authority from the former president making him Liberia's 24th President. Meanwhile, some of the victims are still nursing their wounds at nearby hospitals and clinics.
